WHAT IS THE TIMES AND THE SCRIPTURES?

Originally, The Times and the Scriptures was a curriculum conceived of by the late author and editor, Norm Fox.  He saw a need to answer some important questions:

  • How can we do better at teaching Christian adults and teens about current events and the Bible so the body of Christ can dispense effective witness and leadership into our nation?

  • How can Bible-believing churches, schools and families in America offer true citizenship education?

  • How can we train up a generation of biblically-informed Christian voters to restore the godly foundations of American culture and government?

He observed that efforts to increase voter turnout and other political participation among believers had not been matched by enough Bible-based citizenship education. Christians should not simply vote and exercise influence on their elected officials, they should do so with a solid knowledge of the scriptures and of the culture in which they live. Many churches, schools, and home school families feel ill-equipped to offer the kind of teaching that would address this challenge, so a solid, user-friendly curriculum was needed.

His response to these questions and observations was to create a powerful, easy-to-use curriculum.  The Times and the Scriptures brought current news together with Bible truths and America's Christian heritage to create a unique and fascinating course for teens or adults.

He would condense an amazing amount of news research each week and make it available for the teacher to use easily and effectively. It would provide up-to-the-minute weekly discussion guides and supporting research to help Christian teens and adults integrate the scriptures, current events, government and America’s spiritual heritage into a powerful study.

T&S consisted of a Weekly Bulletin, a study guide containing news of political and moral importance coupled with scripture references and discussion questions to help the class develop a biblical perspective on current events in America and worldwide, as well as a growing resource notebook of cross-referenced Backgrounders, articles providing more thorough scriptural and historical treatment of topics likely to come up in the news (for example, sanctity of life, definition of marriage, "separation of church and state," public and private education, law enforcement and the courts, etc.) and key Bible passages (such as Psalm 2, Psalm 78, and Romans 13), with recommended sources for deeper study.

Norm put his heart and soul into this project and faithfully published the Weekly Bulletin until his health, and eventual death, prevented him continuing. He’s no longer here to curate the current events and produce the Bulletin, but the sixty-one Backgrounders that he wrote continue to be powerful resource and a treasure trove of Biblical wisdom.

Since this is no longer a current events curriculum, the Backgrounders are now in the foreground and will henceforth be referred to as Essays.  There is no particular timetable, but the intention is that eventually all the Essays will be published on this website. We hope they will be a blessing to you.
